I will delete the lot and do a clean install today. What about the db tables? Did you drop them as well? And it all works at last. Bit of a mystery why it failed before but no worries for me now. Hope others having similar trouble read this and persisit. But rather an installation issue? Perhaps FTP dropped some files? Or permission changes resolved this? I think its from the hosting company, i advice all having the same problem to contact their hosting provider. Everything was working fine before the upgrade. I'll let you know when I figure it out. Just removing and reinstalling the components didn't fix the problem originally so I assume there was some kind of file corruption in the Administrator folder.
I uploaded another fresh copy of joomla, then reinstalled the back up copy of my finished web site on top of it. My web site is not showing but my contents are there.
